- To give you a general idea, if you’re searching for something in particular.
- Sex
- Is there sex in the book? I mean we’re talking YA so there’s nothing X-rated of course, but depending on your family values and the age of your child you may not want a book where sex or physical romance is even alluded to. I’ll include off-hand mentions, innuendo, anything implied, as well as actual occurrences of anything from kisses up to intercourse.
- Language
- Is there profanity? Are there slurs?
- Violence
- Many fantasy and sci-fi books have some sort of action, but is it a space ship shooting lasers at another? Is it people fighting with magic? Is it a bloody fist-fight? How descriptive is it? Is there gore?
- Religion
- Does religion feature? Is it an actual human religion or a fictional one in the story?
- Politics
- Does the story seem to obviously lean one way or the other? Are there “hidden” (read, pretty obvious) messages the book is trying to get across?
